Signposts Team SP and Luton Rotary – Big Riverbank Litter Clearance

Local communities came together last Saturday (5th April) when Signposts Team SP and Luton Rotary led a group of volunteers to clear litter from the River Lea.

A team of 88 volunteers worked hard to clean up the area, picking litter from the river and riverbank area around Marsh Road, Riddy Lane and Leagrave Park. The group even found time to help tidy up Leagrave High Street.

Starting at 9.30am, the volunteers, led by homeless clients currently living in Signpost hostels, got to work tidying the area. After a long and hard day the group had managed to collect over 30 bags of rubbish, making a real difference to the beautiful stretch of the River Lea.

The project was supported by a number of organisations including Luton Borough Council and Luton Culture, who provided equipment, and the University of Bedfordshire and Stopsley Baptist Church.
Other local residents were also particularly keen to support the project, with project manager Phyl Rainey receiving a number of calls from people who had seen a news item in the build up to the day.

At the end of the day the group enjoyed a well-earned feast, with meals donated by Tesco’s, Domino’s Pizza, Pret A Mange, McDonalds, Gerry Taylor butchers, Asda, Morrison’s, Lidl, Ocado and Poundland.
The hard work of one of Signposts Dunstable’s clients, Ross Bennett, also went a long way to helping ensure everybody was fed. Ross worked tirelessly leading up to the event liaising with the various businesses to ask for their support for the project.

Phyl Rainey, Deputy Manager- Community Relations, said: “It was absolutely amazing that we managed to get so many people together to do such an incredible job. Everybody worked really hard on the day and we made a real difference.

“The area now looks so fantastic and we hope that local people can enjoy it. I’d like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to all of our volunteers.”
